I was previously an advocate for Joe Newton. It was mainly wishful thinking, but the rookie doesn't appear to have any shot (or to really be getting a shot) at unseating Leonard Stephens as the third tight end.
Jonathan Alston has emerged as someone that could potentially challenge for the final offensive line spot, but that is still Floyd Womack's job to lose. However, the battle would appear to be down to Womack, Alston, and Pat Ross.
C.J. Wallace is getting some hype after some big hits during the scrimmage. Hype is all that is it (more on that later), but I thought I should at least mention him as a potential candidate for a safety spot. However, his only chance at making the roster is probably an injury.
I would put these 52 guys down basically as locks:
Offense (24)
QB (3) - Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, David Greene
RB/FB (5) - Shaun Alexander, Maurice Morris, Mack Strong, Leonard Weaver, Josh Parry
WR (5) - Deion Branch, Nate Burleson, Bobby Engram, DJ Hackett, Ben Obomanu
TE (3) - Marcus Pollard, Will Heller, Leonard Stephens
OL (8) - Walter Jones, Sean Locklear, Chris Spencer, Chris Gray, Tom Ashworth, Ray Willis, Rob Sims, Mansfield Wrotto
Defense (25)
DE (4) - Patrick Kerney, Bryce Fisher, Darryl Tapp, Baraka Atkins
DT (6) - Rocky Bernard, Chuck Darby, Marcus Tubbs, Brandon Mebane, Russell Davis, Craig Terrill
OLB (5) - Julian Peterson, Leroy Hill, Kevin Bentley, Lance Laury, Will Herring
ILB (2) - Lofa Tatupu, Niko Koutouvides
S (4) - Deon Grant, Brian Russell, Michael Boulware, Mike Green
CB (4) - Marcus Trufant, Kelly Jennings, Jordan Babineaux, Josh Wilson
Special Teams (3)
K - Josh Brown
P - Ryan Plackemeier
LS - Derek Rackley
That leaves one spot for an offensive lineman. And as noted, it comes down to Floyd Womack, Pat Ross, and Jonathan Alston with Womack as the front runner. There is an outside chance the team could keep two of those guys at the cost of Craig Terrill. Or DE Brandon Green could challenge for the 10th defensive lineman spot if Terrill remains sidelined. Both of those scenarios are unlikely. The only other question mark is Josh Parry over Marquis Weeks, but Weeks should be seen as a long shot to overtake Parry.
