OG Floyd Womack and TE Bennie Joppru will make the trip, and so will C Pat Ross who did not take part in practice on Friday afternoon and had a brace on his hand. We could also get our first look at CB DeJuan Groce and TE Andy Stokes. And that means there is at least a chance that Womack will play. He worked at LT a little bit in practice, but if he plays, expect it to be at guard. The offensive line will be interesting to watch.
The starting line for the first quarter will be:
LT Tom Ashworth-LG Rob Sims-C Chris Spencer-RG Chris Gray-RT Ray Willis
And they will likely close the game with:
LT Jonathan Alston-LG Mansfield Wrotto-C Pat Ross-RG Steve Vallos-RT Kyle Williams
What happens in between takes a little guesswork:
Likely (at least somewhat): LG Rob Sims could stay in longer than Chris Spencer and Chris Gray. Tom Ashworth may move from LT to RT when Jonathan Alston comes into the game, before eventually giving way to Kyle Williams. Austin King could end up playing the final possession or two at center, instead of Pat Ross. If he does, then expect to see Jason Murphy at LG as well.
Possible: Mansfield Wrotto, who had been working exclusively at LG, could be also be used at RG. Floyd Womack may play at one of the guard positions or not at all.
Unlikely, but plausible: If they really want to confuse Ray Willis, then he might come in at RG in the second half.
For anyone that hates Floyd Womack and/or his injury problems (I assume I got most of you with that), take a look at the entirety of Bennie Joppru's career (below), and then ask yourself:
"Am I all that excited that Bennie Joppru might be back too early from his painful hip pointer and pulled thigh muscle injuries? And that he could make the team ahead of another TE that happens to be out with a sprained ankle?"
You might also better understand why I wrote him off after the scrimmage, especially given Mike Holmgren's comments.
The Illustrious NFL Career of Bennie Joppru
August 6, 2003: Suffered a pulled groin that was initially thought to keep him out a week, but he never returned and the injury ended up getting him placed on IR and he missed his entire rookie season.
2004 Season: Spent training camp and the first 6 weeks of 2004 on the PUP list and was then placed on IR again.
May 16, 2005: Tore his ACL in minicamp. He spent a third straight season on IR.
August 12, 2006: Finally healthy and managed to play in a preason game. In 3 preseason games he had 4 catches and made the roster
September 10, 2006: Was on the active roster for the Houston Texans, but didn't register a catch.
September 17, 2006: Appeared on the Texans inactive list for the next 3 weeks and was then released by the team during the bye week on October 9.
October 12, 2006: Signed to the Chicago Bears practice squad.
November 29, 2006: Signed by the Seahawks the active roster off of the Bears practice squad.
Clarifying the PUP List
The PUP list is one of the most confusing and least understood things in the NFL. I have outlined the basics below for anyone that wants a little clarity. Marcus Tubbs is no longer on the PUP list and has participated in practice. Floyd Womack was never on the PUP list (at least not this year). Nobody on the Seahawks roster can now go on the PUP list, not count toward the 53-man roster limit, and then come back after the first 6 weeks. PUP is no longer an option for any player, including Tubbs and Womack.
Here are the basics of how it works:
1) You can only place guys on the PUP list before training camp. They can't participate in camp, but they can rehab.
2) Once a guy participates in camp, then he can't go on the PUP list, even if he was on it before camp.
3) Players on the PUP list count toward the 80-man and 75-man roster limits.
4) If a player stays on the PUP list and never participates in camp, then the team can put him on the regular season PUP list. He must sit out the first 6 weeks, but he doesn't count toward the 53-man roster limit
5) The team has Weeks 6 through 8 to decided to either activate the player to the active roster (and has to release someone because he then counts against the 53), place him on IR, or release him.
